Where do you live?
Omaha, NE
What are your athletic achievements and competition history?
2010 Heartland Classic, Omaha NE – first competition of my career and I placed 1st in Heartland Classic Beginner, 1st in Heartland Classic Medium Novice, 1st in Heartland Classic Medium Open, and 1st in Natural Nebraska Short Open Class. 2010 KC Gold’s Classic – I placed 3rd in the medium open figure class.
What or who inspires you to compete?
Determination. I am a goal oriented type of girl and once I set one, I work as hard as I have to in order to attain it. Inspiration comes from watching these women in the sport since I was small. I have always looked up to them. Watching my own body and mind transform is also a huge factor. Finally, my mother. She has done the impossible for me and always is able to make something out of nothing – she has shown me that it IS possible, just believe.
What excites you most about competing with the WBFF?
Oh gosh, the opportunities the organization offers to its athletes are phenomenal. I am also looking forward to meeting new people and making life- long friends along the way. The women that I have met thus far are all unique and amazing in their own way.
What are your future goals?
My future goals include being able to share my story with whomever I can to inspire those that have shared my struggles or simply to encourage someone to believe in themselves. I want to make this my life and be as successful as I can possibly be while making a difference in peoples’ lives along the way. I also want to earn my pro status – and share the stage with the women that have inspired me.
What obstacles have you overcome to achieve your goals (what’s your story?)
Ever since I was little, I remember always watching those fitness shows of the women who would go on stage and perform a fitness/gymnastic type routine. I was fascinated by them. Never in a million years did I ever think I could do that.
My journey has not been an easy one. I have not traveled from point A to point B to get where I am. I have encountered obstacles along the way which required some detours to get where I am. During my childhood I was confronted with adversities which contributed to issues with my self esteem. I struggled not only with confidence but with weight. At the age of 12, Methamphetamine addiction sunk its teeth into my father. I watched as my family unraveled under these circumstances. This left me to finish my childhood without a father figure in my life. My mother raised my younger brother and myself on her own.
I would like to provide some background on my mother’s heroic efforts as a single mother. My entire family resides in Mexico. My mother came to America with nothing but her hopes for her children. She had no understanding of American culture. She did not have family and friends in America to support her. Being alone in a strange country magnified tenfold the hardships she endured for my brother and I . She did the impossible to make sure we lived a somewhat normal life. She made sacrifices that I will never be able to repay. Her sacrifices made me determined to become successful and independent. I wanted to make sure that someday, I am able to care for her as she cared for me. I seek to ensure that I never have to rely on anyone to take care of me except for me. In the immortal words of Beyonce Knowles, “I depend on me”. I graduated high school early and moved out on my own at 17. I have been making my way on my own ever since.
Since moving to Omaha, I have run into several “speed bumps” along the way. I have always had trouble meeting people because I lacked confidence. I sometimes feel anxiety around people I don’t know. Not having any family here made it extremely difficult for me every day. I ended up spending a lot of my time alone. Aside from feeling alone, I was having a little difficulty making ends meet and at one point I lived in my car, but I refused to fail and kept going.
This, coupled with depression, stress, and a few other factors, led to a constant struggle with my weight. I felt horrible. I ballooned to about 185 lbs. As if it wasn’t difficult enough for me to make friends as it was, my self esteem had hit an all time low resulting in me isolating myself from the world. I didn’t want to go anywhere because I didn’t feel comfortable in my own skin. I was always dressing in the baggiest clothes I could find. Something needed to change.
I decided to invest the little money I had in a trainer after numerous failed diet attempts. He put me on a plan and I lost some weight and I was feeling pretty good. I was pleased to discover a new found confidence. At this point, I wanted to take it to the next level. I decided I wanted to enter a figure competition – you know, like the women that I looked up to since I was a little girl. The problem was, at that time, I let fear get in my way. I was so afraid of taking that next step and that someone “like me” would never be able to look like that. About a year passed by and I wasn’t really dropping anymore weight, so I finally made the decision to move forward with entering my first figure competition.
Boy has it been a ride. I had no idea what I was getting myself into. Not only that, I got hooked! I love it! I still have many struggles as I wish I could see my family more often than every other year and my job and school are very stressful. Bottom line, I was that girl that didn’t trust enough to take risks – who was afraid to dream and dream big. I constantly limited myself to my own experiences and what others’ estimations of me where and what they thought was possible. I am still guilty of that on occasion; however, I did it. Yes, I did it and I want more. I want to share my story with anyone that I can and be an inspiration/role model to all those people out there that share the struggles that I have been through.

*Anyone you would like to thank who has been a part of your fitness journey?
Him, of course. Without God, things are much more difficult. Secondly, my mother Rose. She is the most amazing, strong, and loving mom/friend/person that I know – I love you more than the world. My closest friends…although some of you are separated by hundreds of miles, you’ve all been there and I couldn’t ask for more. Finally, anyone that has offered me advice or help in any way – I am forever grateful and you are all appreciated.

Rachelle,
You may not remember me as we have only met once since you were a small girl, but I am friends with mother and know her quite well, She truly is a courageous and wonderful person. If everyone was as good as her, the world would not have many problems. Your story is an inspiration. You go girl.
