Kendra’s Story:

“As a kid I remember always being intrigued by strong powerful women that I would see in movies or on TV. American Gladiators and G.I. Jane were some women that I remember feeling empowered by because of their strong muscular physiques.  I remember being in high school and thinking I would love to compete in a fitness competition someday. I had no clue what that meant when I said it. Being an athlete and playing sports my whole life I spent little time in the gym and most of my time was spent on the field. I always stayed in great shape and never had to worry much about my physique.

When I decided to do The WBFF show in Kansas City I was so excited because I knew what my body had once looked like as an athlete and I couldn’t wait to get it back. When I had gotten out of high school I played co-ed sports periodically and worked out when I felt like it. I didn’t have a set regimen and I defiantly wasn’t eating what I should’ve been eating. I use to always say I work out because I love to eat. I’m sure everyone has used that excuse a few times.

In the spring of 2010 I met my boyfriend and Hitch fit trainer Sean Van Horn. He was telling me what his daily routine was and I looked at him like he was crazy. It consisted of 6 meals a day and working out 5 days a week, I replied with “you are crazy!” and that will never work for me. When he told me he was going to do a fitness competition in the fall of 2011 I was supportive of him but had no clue what it was going to be like. During his transformation I was inspired to eat better myself and gave the whole 6 meals a day a try. When I started to see results I loved it. When his show came around in September I saw all these girls on stage that were my age and I was like hey I could totally do this.

What had seemed like an unattainable goal was now something I felt like I could achieve. In November of 2011 I emailed Diana Chaloux Lacerte and expressed my interest for the WBFF show in May of 2012 and told her I was ready to start as soon as possible. Little to my knowledge I was a little ahead of the race. She replied with excitement that I wanted to compete and told me to enjoy the holidays and we would begin my fitness journey at the beginning of the year. I had a little ways to go since I had never dieted down for a show before and my body was pretty comfortable with where it was at. When I started I was giving it about 90% of my effort. Diana would send me email’s weekly encouraging me to do my best. I could not see the light at the end of the tunnel. I had no clue what my body was capable of doing. Each week I consistently lost 1-2 lbs. I was amazed at what a little determination and hard work could do. I was feeling more inspired than ever. People were stopping me on the street asking me what I was doing; girls wanted me to train them at the gym even though I’m not a personal trainer. I was inspiring others just by my actions. Losing weight was rewarding but motivating others was the most rewarding thing of it all.

When I stepped onstage in May it was such a thrill. I had reached a goal I didn’t know was possible but Diana believed in me every day and kept pushing me when I doubted myself. I took third in Diva Fitness Model and I was ecstatic! I have high hopes for the years to come. I will be competing in the May WBFF show in Kansas City next year and then continuing onto the Worlds Stage in Canada in August. With the motivation of the Hitch Fit family and the inspiration of my boyfriend I have found happiness in being healthy and inspiring others.”
