How to Dress For Your New Body

How to Dress For Your New Body

After undergoing a major weight loss transformation, your old clothes just won’t fit you the same. They’ll be bagging, saggy, bunchy and just too big!  Plus, the styles and cuts that you used to wear when you carried more weight may not be as flattering on you and your new body.  One of the only downfalls to weight loss is the struggle to find the right clothes for your new body!  And although it takes a bit of exploring, testing and multiple trips to and from the changing room, it is a whole lot of fun to shop for a skinnier you!!

Ready to go shopping for your new body?  Here are some of our best 6 tips to flatter your new figure and show off your body’s best (new) assets!

1.      Redress your body and your mind

The key to a total body transformation isn’t just physical—it’s mental as well.  Your mind needs to accept the changes your body has gone through before you ever step foot into the department store.  Understand that your body has changed and that your mind will need some time to adjust to your new clothing style—whether that be a dramatic change in size, style, cut or even color (some overweight individuals often resort to wearing black on a day-to-day basis because it’s slimming).  When you go into a department store, keep in mind that it’s not the size on the tag that matters—it’s how the clothes makes you feel and look in your new body!!

2.      Purchase the most flattering styles for any figure

There are some styles that will truly complete your transformation and they are the most flattering on any body type.  Keep in mind these flattering staples when you’re shopping:

  1. Sweetheart neckline: Sweetheart necklines are flattering on almost every figure.  They make shoulders seem less broad, extenuate a woman’s beautiful collar bones and flatter women with smaller chests.
  2. Cinched waists: Your waist is the smallest part of your midsection.  Flatter your body with an empire waist dress, a waist-height belt or a cinched blouse.
  3. Wide-legged or flare jeans:  For women who are a bit self-conscious about their thighs, head toward the flare jean section.  Flare jeans draw the eyes down to your calf and make you seem taller.
  4. A-line skirts:  Skirts that flare out are more flattering than those that curve in.
  5. Heels!:  Don’t be afraid to whip out your heels!  High heels or wedges make us look taller and slimmer.

3.      Don’t neglect your undergarments

Every single part of our body changes during a weight loss transformation…and we mean every single part.  So don’t neglect your undergarments!  Make sure to purchase new bras and underwear that fit correctly.  You may want to get resized or look at a lingerie sizing chart before you purchase your undergarments to make sure you’re buying what’s best for your body (many lingerie specialty stores will help you with this).

4.      Clean out your closet

Throw out all clothes that are too big or out-of-date.  If you have bigger clothes waiting in the closet for you, you may be more inclined to gain the weight back.  Keep in mind that out-of-fashion also means out-of-closet.  Even if it does fit you, but it’s out of date, it’s probably not flattering!  BONUS: sell your gently used clothing back to a place like Plato’s Closet!

5.      From the top of your head to the tips of your toes

Many of our transformations don’t just change their bodies, but they start taking better care of themselves as a whole.  That means that they start exploring with new types of makeup, beautiful hair styles, great skin care products, new accessories and even new shoes.  Take your entire being into account when shopping—what else can you do to complete your look?

6.      Extenuate your best feature

Have a particular body part you’re especially proud of?  Show it off!!!  Love your abs?  Head to the beach and wear a bikini instead of a one piece.  Got great calves?  Sport dresses and skirts more often.  Proud of your triceps?  Make tank tops a staple in your wardrobe.

Keep in mind that it’s not just our bodies that make us feel great—it’s what we dress our bodies in every single day!  One of the most fun parts of any weight loss transformation is the post-transformation shopping experience—you’ll be shocked at what you end up buying…not to mention your new size!!!
