Snacking Pitfalls
We’ve all been there. While completing mind-numbing desk work at the office or sitting around the house waiting for the kids to get home from school – the mindless snacker in all of us comes out. Whatever sweet or salty (or sweet and salty) snack is on hand goes straight from the package to your mouth. Portion control is non-existent! Whatever tiny treat you crave, even healthy items like almonds or watermelon, is not meant to be consumed in such large quantities. Almonds, especially, are loaded with calories, which is why you only need a handful to get your needed vitamins and minerals.
Make Your Water Bottle Your New Best Friend
Your BFF should be water – all day, every day. By consistently taking in water, you’ll not only flush out toxins, and keep a healthy bodily fluid balance, but you will also feel full most of the time! Eat when you’re hungry, drink water every other minute, and you’ll be on your way to healthy, happy living, without stepping foot in the gym!
Clean Mouth = Clean Eating
Motivation to grab a snack can be significantly diminished when you’ve got clean, minty fresh breath. The last thing I want to do is muck up that lovely feeling with food, especially since some snacks really do not taste great paired with spearmint.
TV Watching Should Be A Food-Free Zone
It’s so easy to pop those snacks open when you’re comfortably enjoying your favorite show at the end of a hard day. Resist the urge! Drink water, and commit to making those relaxing moments free of any kind of snacking. One handful can easily lead to two or more when you’re engrossed in the latest episode of “The Bachelor.” Solve the problem by keeping all food in the cupboard, and away from the side tables by your couch.
Out Of Sight
Store all food in the pantry or cupboards. Simply seeing it on the counter is an easy way to grab handfuls whenever you pass by. If you must keep certain items on the counter because of storage issues, make it the fruits and veggies! Those are much healthier options to indulge in when boredom takes over.
Leave It On The Shelf
The best way to avoid those snacking pitfalls is to just not put it in your grocery cart! Cut off these bad habits at the root, and leave the junk foods at the grocery store. The best way to shop for groceries is to stick to the outside edges of the store. Only hit the middle if you absolutely need to – then get out quick! Meats, dairy, fruits, vegetables, and breads are all kept on the sides and back of the store, so you can easily avoid the tempting snack aisles.
