Gluten Free Fitness

The most recent trend in fitness is Gluten Free Fitness Nutrition.

Gluten, a protein composite found in wheat, rye and barley, is quite literally the “glue” holding ingredients together. Discovered as an alternative to meat, gluten has since become a source of severe allergies in many. Those with this allergy, known as celiac disease, find that gluten erodes the lining of their stomach, causing irritation and severe sickness. For those without this disease, gluten can still inhibit overall health in people trying to lose weight or merely get in shape.

Where Gluten Appears:

Since this ingredient is generally used in bread-like products, including cakes and pastries, gluten’s effect on weight may have more to do with the actual entrees being consumed than the ingredient itself. Gluten free alternatives include substituting wheat with natural ingredients like rice flour. There are, however, other interesting products that contain gluten. Medication, energy bars and even herbal supplements can harbor this ingredient.

What to Eat:

The gluten-free diet craze turns to fruit, veggies, meat, nuts and dairy products. These are all sufficient sources of nutrition, and help many individuals avoid foods that contribute to weight gain. Cake, breads and other unhealthy gluten-containing foods can be avoided, allowing us to lead a lighter, healthier life. The buck doesn’t stop there, however. This New York Times article tells the story of a woman who was gluten-free before gluten-free was “cool”. The recipes she delved into show just how normal a Gluten-free life can be after all.
