Mary’s Story:

“My transformation started in 2012 when I was preparing to graduate from college and begin a new chapter in my life. At over 160 lbs, I was the heaviest I had ever been. Some may have killed to see that number on the scale, but I knew that family history meant the “Batdorf belly” was on its way, and I knew I had to do something about it. Already diagnosed with hypothyroidism, and years of stomach pain I began to realize I had a sensitivity to gluten. After cutting out gluten and eating plenty of veggies and protein, I lost 15 lbs and was able to maintain the weight loss. I became comfortable with my weight loss, but I wanted to tone.

On a summer day at lunch, I was scrolling through my Instagram newsfeed and came across my friend Gina Wagner’s transformation. I did some digging into the hashtags she posted with her before and after picture, and started to research Hitch Fit. After talking to Gina about her transformation, I decided it was my turn. I contacted Diana and she created my personalized nutrition and workout plans. I dove in immediately. A couple of months after I began my transformation, I hit a few hiccups in the road. My grandfather passed away unexpectedly, and then I slipped on the Kansas winter ice and pinched the sciatica nerve in my back. I was bedridden and on medication for days. After a long 8 months of recovery and getting back to a normal workout routine, I was able to slowly strengthen my way back into doing intense workouts. This past Thanksgiving, I went to the gym to do a HIIT class with my 56 year old parents who have both lost about 30 lbs through exercise and eating healthy, and they whooped my butt. Although I was proud of them, I would say my ego was a bit bruised that they were in better shape than I was! I know it was time to give this a shot again, so I decided it was time for me to start round 2, and I contacted Diana.

Nothing in life worth having is easy, right? Well I had my fair share of obstacles throughout this transformation, but everything I encountered has made my story that much more memorable for me. Working 50 hour weeks, being a night time grad student, getting sick twice, going out of state for work, hanging out with people who didn’t eat clean, and having tempting snacks and goodies all around the office didn’t make this easy. I adjusted my schedule and started waking up at 4:30am to get my morning cardio in and went again after work for my strength training sessions. I constantly had people asking me what I was training for, and they thought I was crazy for not training for anything (like a fitness competition, triathlon, marathon, etc.). What they didn’t know was that I was doing this for myself, not anybody else, and that I was going to prove to them that I didn’t need a reason to do this for myself.

I wasn’t going for “skinny.” I’ve never been skinny in my life, but I wanted to be happy, healthy, strong, and confident. The weight came off slowly, the muscle began to build, and it is all about portion size, nutritional knowledge, a mix of cardio and weight training, and most of all, determination. The best thing I ever did was use a heart rate monitor to calculate my caloric burn. The cardio machine calculators aren’t accurate, so I realized how much harder I needed to push myself to hit my true calorie burn for the day. In addition, I used MyFitnessPal to enter all of my food/water and I was able to measure my fats, proteins, and carbs. My future goals are to maintain and focus on my problem areas, but to also use the tools like MyFitnessPal and heart rate monitor to measure my inputs and outputs. I have come a long ways since I began my journey, and this is only the beginning for me!”
