Relax Into A Healthier You
Relaxation is certainly not a word most would associate with a fitness regiment, but it’s definitely essential! Getting fit isn’t just about pushing your limits and eating well; it’s also about taking time to keep your mind and spirit calm.
The Body
Relaxing helps keep your blood pressure low, reducing your risk of heart attacks and other heart-related problems. Stress takes a toll on your ticker – so don’t underestimate the value of taking a few minutes to breathe, meditate, and just free your mind from life’s pressures.
Your immune system can also fall under attack if stress takes over. According to recent research, stress impedes the body’s ability to fight infection by hampering the immune response to inflammation. According to Sheldon Cohen, Ph.D., of Carnegie Mellon University, consistent stress that lasts more than one month, but less than six, could double an individual’s risk of catching the common cold. While a seemingly insignificant virus, it’s very indicative of the troubles that stress can cause the physical body.
The Mind
Studies have also shown that a relaxed mind is one that can recall more long term memories. Mice were unable to remember how to find their way through a maze after chronic stress showed impairment in the prefrontal cortex. So, if you seem to be plagued by the inability to remember your dentist appointments, chances are limiting your stress could help you out!
Depression is something that seems to be hitting the nation as a whole, more and more. The stress of life has also increased. Response to stress is often shown in lowered desire to participate in pleasurable activities, thanks to the increased presence of cortisol. This hormone reduces levels of serotonin and dopamine, which contributes directly to depression.
Help your brain function a little smoother, a little clearer, and with a little more gusto by finding ways to relax! A clearer mind will allow you to make wiser decisions, which will, in turn, contribute even more to your stress-reducing plan!
Active Relaxation
We’ve found the best way to feel relaxed is by participating in something you enjoy. A bath, massage, and even sitting by the window with a good book are all fantastic choices. Working out is another option. While it may not seem like the classic “relaxation” activity, the relieved feeling your mind and body will receive points to an active relaxation technique! Yoga and pilates are excellent classes to participate in, especially for those who need quiet meditative activities to slow down their mind. Hitch Fit has you covered for all the moves and exercises you can think of. While you’re at it, take a look at the programs we have to offer, and see if one of them may be just the ticket to a more relaxed mind and body.
