WBFF Diva Fitness Model Matreena Noland

Name Bio and Stats

Matreena Noland – Diva Fitness Model 35 Plus

Occupation

I’m the Owner of KC Event & Corporate Massage LLC. As an independent business owner I am the sales person, the administrator and jack of all trades. I had worked as a massage therapist off and on for about 10 years and I saw an opportunity to bring the benefits of massage and stress relief to the workplace and reach a client base of people who might not otherwise get to experience massage. I currently maintain 5 Independent Contractors. I recognized as a therapist I could only make so much money, get so much done in a day, with my own 2 hands, working by myself and for myself. The idea was to get more hands working and give other massage therapists an opportunity to build a bigger client base from within the corporate setting and events that we work at, a client base they might not otherwise have access to. I guess it’s fair to say I’m an Entrepreneur.

As of 2004 I also have been teaching Yoga and Group Fitness. The last 2 ½ years I’ve trained in the STOTT Pilates method. My training is in Injuries and Special Populations, Mat, Reformer, Chair and Cadillac – all beginning and intermediate levels and Pilate’s Athletic Conditioning. I worked as a Personal Trainer at a local Pilate’s studio during the last few years and in December of 2010; I decided to venture out on my own and I am currently working with private clients.

Kansas City, Missouri

What are your athletic achievements and competition history?

I’m thrilled to say “this is the first time I will be competing and it will be with the WBFF”!

By the age of 6 my parents enrolled me in gymnastics. It was my favorite sport of choice!  I also began tap, jazz and ballet classes at that time too. From my parent’s account of me, I liked moving and bouncing around to music before I could walk. My life has taken a natural path of continuing to make movement part of it through my love of fitness, Yoga and Pilates.

When I started teaching Yoga and Group Fitness in 2004 I created a Functional Movement and Fusion based class that combined Vinyasa Yoga, Pilates and body sculpting. I had a great following and consistent class participation of up to 25 to 35 students in the evenings. People were replacing Friday night happy hour and coming to class instead of going out to drink!

With the help of my trainer, Diana Chaloux and the Hitch Fit system my biggest achievement to date has been preparing to step on stage for the WBFF US Central Championship!  I’ve changed my body, built some muscle and dropped my body fat from 16% to 10% in just 8 weeks and my body is still changing!

What inspires me to compete?

I’m inspired to lead example. By stepping on stage for the WBFF I feel I can become a better fitness professional

I’m inspired to help all people get fit, but I’m highly motivated to help other women in my demographic to quit using all the excuses to stay stuck in their current bodies. Everyone’s heard it “my metabolism has slowed down, I can’t lose it because I’m too old, I’m going through menopause, my body isn’t going to change”. I realize competing isn’t going to be for everyone, but I can certainly empathize better with my clients now that I’ve put my efforts into changing my diet and body to prep for a show. Setting an example and a standard for myself and other people is inspiring me to compete.

I also see the opportunity to segway competing and build a name and a brand for myself, become a leader and a top fitness professional in the industry. There goes my Entrepreneurial spirit again.

And I finally get to fulfill a fitness goal of my own! I gave serious consideration to competing and trying to get into fitness modeling 10 years ago. I didn’t have the resources and knowhow to do it and I was so busy working to put my son through college and building my business I put it on the back burner. So as the saying goes “it’s better late than never”!

Who inspires me?

I’m inspired by athletes who are competing and those  who have competed in the past and I keep in inspired by the comradey of the athletes. I get fired up by the accomplishment of other people, but I also get fired up to push and work harder because of them.

I’m also inspired by people who are seeking to change and live better, those people who have been following my transformation and journey through my blog and facebook. I had no idea how powerful changing MY life was going to be at inspiring other people. I’ve often said I wanted to something as grand as Mother Teresa with my life. (Take care of the sick and dying) Maybe I can save one person at a time through the process of competing, sharing bits and pieces of my journey, ideas and providing helpful information. How about that!

What excites you most about competing with the WBFF?

The WBFF represents and maintains the highest standards in the industry and represents top quality athletes. If I can represent the WBFF, the fitness industry and walk away with a Pro card I’m excited by that! The opportunity to network with other professionals in the industry, build relationships with those individuals and help the fitness industry thrive is also exciting.

On May 21st when I step on that stage and honestly say “I did it, I’m here, I’m living it and I put my ALL into achieving my goal. I can be proud of what I accomplished knowing how hard I worked to step on stage with the best of the best athletes”!

What are your future goals?

First on my agenda is studying and taking the NASM certification, building a better blog, (it’s a work in progress like me) and learning more about how to market and building a business out of this experience, possibly writing an E-book, creating some Fusion based workout videos, a cookbook for athletes, competing in Toronto. I hope to earn Pro status. I’ll be a busy little bee, but I’ll be making lots of honey!

I’ve seen more interest being generated for Wellness programs on the corporate level. The website for KC Event & Corporate Massage is being revised to add In-Home-Care and I’ll be adding a link to host other fitness and health professionals. If you’re in the KC area and interested please contact me.

*What obstacles have you overcome to achieve your goals (what’s your story?)
I was diagnosed with Adenomyosis 3 years ago. It isn’t a serious condition and sorry guys if this is too much information, but I experience severe, painful menstrual cycles. A Hysterectomy is the only cure and I refuse to have surgery. The pain is horrible and can last for as long as 2 weeks. Unfortunately, I can’t take Ibuprofen for pain. I have an allergic reaction called Angioendema. The main symptom is swelling below the skins surface and sometimes welts or hives. But lucky me…. my faces, eyes, lips, mouth, hands and feet swell and it’s dangerous because my throat can swell shut,  there is also abdominal cramping and difficulty breathing that can last for 12 to 72 hours. I feel like I have the flu and I look like Will Smith from the movie Hitch when he had the allergic reaction to peanuts. Lol There are days I’d rather lie in bed in the fetal position with a heating pad and knock myself out with drugs, but no matter how much pain I’m in, I have to suck it up and just get on with my day and workouts. I found that endorphins from exercises and Yoga help tremendously!

Learning to love myself and consistently take care of myself emotionally and physically was an obstacle. Growing up there were times of violence and awful upheaval in my home. Those scars left me feeling stressed, overwhelmed, angry, sad, alone and ashamed. As an adult I found anytime those feeling crept into my life, self destructive behavior, diluting my pain with alcohol first, and occasionally with drugs was an easy way to shut out my emotional pain and escape. One day I had enough of diluting my feelings and decided to make a decision to stop reacting with negative behaviors.  I quit using alcohol as an escape and found the strength to get rid of ALL the negative people and influences in my life including most of my immediate family.

When negativity creeps in to my life I go to the gym and work out all that bad stuff. I run harder, I push more weight and I punch and kick out my frustration on a heavy bag. I’ve taken a lot of pent up stuff on those bags! Try it. Next time you feel irritated take that negative day, person or situation and turn it into a positive and use that extra energy and turn it into a killer workout session! Walk away and say “take that”!!  I guarantee you’ll be smiling and feeling better when you leave.
