The WBFF offers more opportunities than any other organization for an athlete that is willing to work hard to achieve success. I personally am excited to have this relationship with this outstanding group.
FUTURE GOALS
As a Professional Boxer – I plan to finish the year by having at least two more fights.
As a Trainer – I want to continue to help and inspire anyone who is taking my training and assist them in making healthy life choices.
As a Fitness Competitor – I intend to further develop my physical and mental capabilities so that other will be encouraged to train with me.
As a Business Person – I have been working on developing a Clothes line and Personal Hygiene Products that relate not only to the Fight World, but to the General Public. I intend to continue those projects.
I was born in Kansas City, Kansas in 1972. I was one of seven children who shared a one bedroom home with our parents Frank Alcanter and B.J. Alcanter. We had very little money, but we did not go without food and other necessities.
In my early years, I was definitely a tomboy and extremely competitive. I found that I was definitely blessed with good athletic abilities. In 1982 when the school boundaries changed I was assigned to another school where I was bullied and afraid to fight back, but I learned that I needed to defend myself and others. When I did take action and in defense of myself and others, I was no longer bullied and was respected in the school.
In 1985 when my parents divorced, my Dad moved to a nicer neighborhood and a better school system and we kids moved with him. Once again, I was faced with some bullying issues which I resolved. I became known as the “tough” pretty girl, that you didn’t want to bother. I played sports and made good grades. Even at a young age I would see the fitness magazines and wanted to be one of those women. When I was in the 6th grade I decided to begin walking the track for 6 to 12 miles everyday and to this day I have never stopped exercising. Developing good eating habits has also been a challenge. I could not choose my food in my youth and that has made me battle my weight because of my diet. Now I keep a rigid diet and teach others how to do the same.
My athletic abilities gave me confidence, but I still lacked self-esteem. It was easy for people to lead me in a wrong direction and I became a rebellious teenager, ran away from home and got involved with a boy who, not only was abusive, but was an extremely negative influence in my life. It was a relationship that lasted three years before I was able to get free and become my own person.
The next steps of my life began at 19 when I got married and started to build my self-confidence, eat right and exercise, once again. I remembered the magazines I had read and the pictures that showed beautiful women and great athletic bodies, I still wanted that goal.
At 20, I became pregnant, but that did not slow me down from exercising through out my pregnancy. I gained only 20 lbs. I was training one week after the birth of my daughter with only 5 lbs. to lose. I am always the happiest when I am working out, and this was no exception. But I do have to use caution, because I have a tendency to become obsessed with exercise. I now keep it under control and I am able to share the exercise experience with all of my Trainee’s.
The next part of my life begins with working at Hooter’s where I received the opportunity to compete in a local Hawaiian Tropic Pageant. I needed the experience because I had never before performed in a swimsuit before a large group of people. From this Pageant I won a trip to Hawaii to compete in the U.S. Finals. I found myself among the most beautiful women I had ever seen. I was somewhat intimidated by the competition, but felt that I held my own with a lot of gorgeous bodies.
From that experience I decided to give my body a different look, going from muscular to soft and curvy. That took developing some different habits in exercise and eating. The next three years I competed in the Hawaiian Tropics and won each time trying to win the U.S. Finals.
Because of these competitions I began making a living as a local swimsuit model. One of the jobs I enjoyed most was being a Round Card Girl for the local boxing matches. Boxing has been a special part of my family. My Grandfather, Joey Alcanter “The Bombarding Mexican” was a professional boxer, along with his brothers in the 1930’s. The idea of me wanting to be a boxer was never very far from my mind. At this time of my life I was now divorced and ready to make changes in my career, so I started training for my first fight.
I was driving to Iowa to compete in a Tough Man competition as part of my first fight training. On the way I was reading the 1999 March Issue of RING Magazine and in the back was the 1936 rankings and a picture of my Grandpa who was ranked 10th in the world Light Weight Division. What a great inspirational moment for me as I was struggling with how to move my fight career forward. It was to be NOW!
My first professional fight was in Terre Haute, Indiana. The headlines in the media read “Beauty Queen turned boxer to make Terre Haute history“. They had it backwards, they didn’t know I was a Boxer turned Beauty Queen. I did fight a good fight, as my competition was 6’ tall and 100 lbs heavier than me, but I had fun, I smiled and though I did not win the fight, I was definitely a winner in the fact I knew I could be a good Professional Boxer.
It takes years to become a good boxer. Since it is not a team sport it can take a gifted athlete years to develop the skills required to be a winner in the ring. The need to be focused on those goals is not always easy, but over the past years, I have required myself to be intense in my training and try not to allow negative people to influence me. I now feel that I am empowered to direct my career and I am looking forward to an exciting time in my life.
Boxing has opened many doors for me. I have been able to travel the world and be an inspiration to other women, as well as, young girls and boys. I am a fighter, in the true sense of the word, and feel I can accomplish, with the right people giving me guidance, my dreams of winning my first Fitness Competition, and all my future fights.
In closing this informational Bio, as I have noted previously, I am extremely pleased to have the WBFF as part of my support group in achieving my goals.
