What are your athletic achievements and competition history:
One of the most focused athletic times in my life was after I moved to the Colorado mountains in 1991. Straight out of college, I jumped into the exciting world of downhill and backcountry skiing, backpacking, hiking, and mountain biking. After fourteen years of thrill seeking, I moved to Kansas to start a family. This was a significantly different lifestyle for me. Six years of living a sedentary life as a new mom took its toll on my body, energy, and self image. I began taking yoga classes and found a beautiful, inspiring teacher who made me believe I could be strong and feel good about myself. This led to joining Lifetime Fitness and learning how to shape my body. I became fascinated with what could be accomplished with resistance training and nutrition. I stepped on stage for the first time as a WBFF competitor last year in Kansas City. It was one of the biggest thrills of my life.
What or who inspires you to compete:
My first competition with WBFF was a great experience. Wow! What a fun group of dedicated, confident women. I’m proud to be a part of this group and I look forward to reconnecting with other like-minded individuals this May!
What excites you most about competing with the WBFF:
There are so many opportunities made available to the athletes in this competition. The possibility of becoming a WBFF Pro and/or winning any of the amazing photo shoots available is very exciting. This show and its organizers do a phenomenal job at providing incentives and opportunities that encourage competitors to put forward their best effort.
What are your future goals:
I’m working now at developing my portfolio for fitness modeling. I am also studying for my nutrition certification through Precision Nutrition. I am frequently asked by friends, family, and random people I meet about my nutrition or workout plan. I want to be a positive inspiration to people and be able to help them with realistic goals for nutrition that will make a difference in their lives.
What obstacles have you overcome to achieve your goals :
My whole life, I have been the tall, skinny girl with pale skin. I was always conscientious of being the tallest girl, the thinnest girl, and not being able to get a tan no matter how many hours I spent in the sun. I slouched and ate a ton of crappy food, trying to become ‘normal looking’. Moving from a small town in Maine to Colorado, and gaining some maturity, gave me some self confidence and made me believe in myself. I also learned that being tall and thin was not such a bad thing if I could just figure out how to ‘balance’ my proportions and get rid of the ‘skinny fat’. Changing how I eat has been one of most significant variations in my life. Gaining muscle and body mass is a constant challenge for me, and I wouldn’t be able to do it without a solid nutrition plan. I’m amazed every day at what I have accomplished through diet and exercise. And thank goodness for spray tans!
