The Fitness Lies We Tell

Liar!

All of us do it. We tell ourselves lies. Whether they are good or bad – they’re still lies and can be holding you back from your goals.

“I can’t do this”

“It’s too much”

“The end is too far away”

“This isn’t worth it”

“I can do this”

“This is the perfect amount of pushups for me”

“Tomorrow is my last day of situps”

“I will be one day skinnier if I do today’s workout”

Whether you believe them or not, these lies aren’t helping you. Even if they are encouraging lies – they are still false snippets of information. Fitness isn’t about pushing through the pain to get as skinny as possible. Nor is it about pushing past your doubts so that you can look amazing. Fitness is about allowing your body to perform its best so that you can feel your best with the added bonus of looking great.

The First Step

Stop telling lies! Get those posters of crazy motivational phrases off your walls and start thinking truth. Instead of “I love lifting weights” (cuz we know you really don’t!), try thinking, if I’ve got time to play on Facebook, I’ve got time to lift a few weights. There are many ways to motivate ourselves with truth.

What Next?

Avoid fitness liars! There are many out there, and where you least expect them. Many fitness instructors or friends will tell you things that simply may not apply to you.

  • You have to sweat out your toxins – This lie is a big one. While it is true that sweating is good for you, it’s untrue that excessive sweating leads to an extraordinary amount of toxins exiting your body! Every human body is different, and sweat glands don’t work the same on every individual. Sweating a lot during your workout may be good for you, but is certainly not something to focus on.
  • Eliminate the carbs – This is a common myth given by experts and regular people alike. Moderation is key, my friends! As long as you are giving your body a healthy and balanced nutritional meal, the elements of that meal are irrelevant. Again – each body is different. Do what’s right and healthy for you!
  • This is your target heart rate for fat burn – Be speculative of specific heart rate numbers for fat burn. Since height and weight have a lot to do with specific heart rate needs, everybody’s will be different. Additionally, this doesn’t account for individuals who have naturally low or high heart rates! There just really is no way you can pinpoint a specific heart rate that you need to target without gauging it based on your body.

Conclusion

Everybody is different! We all need to slow down, take a look at what we’re telling ourselves and apply a good dose of truth to the matter. Talk to your doctor if you want to aim for a specific heart rate. Talk to a nutritionist to find out exactly what meal plan will work best for you.
