Couch Potato Syndrome

As spring approaches, some of us may have dwindling motivation despite the fact that Mother Earth is telling us it’s time to get up and go! The cold and snow have been quite a bother, and we really just want to veg out in front of the TV. We work hard, after all! Shouldn’t we be allowed some couch time? Sure! But…

How Long Have you Been There?

Has your couch become your new best friend? Unless you’ve committed to using it for pushups and situps, you’ve probably been utilizing your couch for too many evenings in a row. Several days becomes several weeks, and before you know it – you’re a couch potato.

While potatoes are healthy as a food choice, they are certainly not healthy in the form of a human being! You need an action plan for getting your patootie off that couch. Consider the following:

Find a New Fitness Routine

The one you “have” obviously isn’t keeping you entertained enough to want to continue, right? Check out YouTube for the latest in fitness crazes, buy a new DVD to inspire you, join a gym, or consider an online personal trainer. Whatever your choice – choose one.

Get Some Accountability

Find a friend, a coworker, or a personal trainer to keep you in check when it comes to your fitness goals. This doesn’t just give you a “mom” to keep up with you and tell you what to do. Accountability means that someone cares about your fitness goals just as much as you do, and is willing to push you to the limits to achieve them. Find that someone!

Redefine What Exercise Means to You

For many a couch potato, the problem isn’t motivation, it’s boredom with the whole “exercise” event. Redefine what exercise means to you, and you just might find yourself excited. Take a dance class at a local college or community center, join an intramural basketball team, or take swim lessons. These types of activities get you up and moving – without the classic exercise stigma.

Serve Others

We know you have a neighbor who’s lawn needs to be mowed, or someone who would love to take their dog on a walk but can’t. Pick up garbage in the street you live on or split firewood for someone. It really doesn’t matter how you choose to serve – if it gets you moving, then it’s good enough! This not only helps your physical self maintain activity, but your soul as well. Hitch Fit loves giving back, and does so frequently through Helping Hands.
