43 Year Old Mother and Online Training Client Gets Lean and Competes in WBFF

I get a little emotional to share this transformation story with you! Carol Lapsley has been an online personal training client since January of 2010, we’ve gone through many phases of transformation, muscle building phases, weight loss phases, and training to step on stage at a WBFF fitness competition. Hers is a story that could have been shared over a year ago, but I’m actually glad that we’ve waited until now, the longer I’ve worked with this amazing woman, the more inspiring and impressive her story has become. She has battled so many obstacles, yet this 43 year old single mom NEVER quits, she never gives in, she constantly works towards improving, working towards new goals and being an incredible role model for her sweet daughter Juliette. We develop wonderful relationships with the majority of our online clients, but Carol definitely has an extra special place in my heart as I’ve had the wonderful opportunity to be a part of her journey through so many ups and downs, she never ceases to amaze me!! Most recently Carol did the online Competition Prep program as she trained for the WBFF Central US Championships which were held here in Kansas City on May 21, 2011. She competed in the Diva Fitness Model division and she was amazing. She looked the best I’ve ever seen her, and she was a shining star on stage! Congratulations Carol!!

Carol’s Story:

“I’m so happy to share my experience with Hitch Fit and how Diana helped me make a physical and nutritional transformation that will last a lifetime.

I’m a 43 year old, single mother of an 11 year old daughter who happens to be active in competitive cheer.  I have a full time job outside of the home and spend roughly 90 minutes daily commuting to and from work and another 2-3 hours a week taking my daughter to her cheerleading academy.  I’ve always been physically active.  I played basketball in high school and spent summers playing softball and on the swim team.  In the early 90s, I saw a woman with a physique like I’d never seen before while watching a Jean-Claude Van Damme movie.  Cory Everson!  I wanted to look like her!  I began working out in the gym and lifting weights immediately in hopes achieving a physique like Cory’s.  Problem was, I was always doing the same old routine and while I did enjoy some physical changes, I never achieved that lean, symmetrical look I looking for.  Reason being, I was only doing a fraction of the whole equation required to achieve those results…I’d learn this later.

I hired a personal trainer in 2005 who was preparing for her first Figure contest.  Her physical transformation was amazing and the contest itself was truly intriguing to me.  At the time, I was in the process of ending a relationship and needed something positive to put my mind and energy into.   She encouraged me to enter a contest.  In January 2006, I woke up and went into Figure athlete mode.  I competed in my first show October 2006 and felt happy that I accomplished the goal.  I stepped out of my comfort zone and overcame fears.  I was hooked!  Since then I’ve spent thousands of dollars with other personal trainers, never achieving the contest condition I needed.  I was discouraged and ready to take a break from that and try it on my own.  After all, I knew how to use lift weights and always used proper form and I certainly didn’t need a “rep counter.”  What I did need was guidance, encouragement, moral support, and knowledge of a professional with the background in the area that I was interested in working, Figure competition.   Enter HitchFit!

I first learned of Diana Chaloux when flipping through the pages of my Oxygen magazine in 2006.  She was sporting a Texas tee-shirt.  Living in Texas, I had a second look and read the caption to discover that Diana competed in Texas in 2005 at the same Figure show I did a year later.  I continued seeing Diana in print in other magazines and we made a MySpace connection a few years ago.  One day, I got a post on my page from her spreading some cheer and positivity.  It touched me that this up-and-coming fitness model/physique athlete took time to post a message on my page.

When I discovered Diana had an online personal training business, I thought…this is it!  I’m gonna hire her as soon as I can.  I bought my first 16 week package on December 30, 2009.  I told her briefly in my initial questionnaire about my experience and what my goals were for the year, which were to put on some muscle size for my next show, come in leaner than ever before, and improve in my placing from the previous year.  She got back to me the next day (New Year’s Eve, 2009) with several pages of information on how we were going to get me there.  The tone of the email and the information was so personal, encouraging and upbeat that she made me feel like she really cared and that she was glad to help me along my journey!  I was so excited that I was in the grocery store on New Year’s Eve buying my new food items while most others were getting ready to party and ring in the New Year.  I was in the gym on New Year’s Day doing my first workout!

I had the chance to meet Diana and Micah in person in July at their KC Hitch Fit studio and trained with Diana one-on-one while I was in Missouri for my 25 year High School Reunion….remember, I said I was 43 years old (or shall I say young…I’ve never felt better!)  Diana’s is just as pleasant in person as she is in her email communications with her online clients.  It was good to have the in-person session as it showed me firsthand the intensity at which they train their in-person clients.  I reflected on that workout when I got home and tried to bring the same intensity to all future workouts.

When Diana told me the WBFF was coming to Kansas City in May 2011, I knew I wanted to be a part of something so promising and exciting.  While I had already set my sights on a particular Figure show in October 2010, I really had the WBFF show as my ultimate goal.  We went into contest preparation mode for the October show in July and again in March for the May WBFF show.  The process was amazing and the formula Hitch Fit uses with their clients works.  I gave Diana weekly email updates of my weight, measurements, workout summaries, and progress photos.  I couldn’t wait to receive her email response later (always the same day).  I was like a kid on Christmas morning anticipating her responses.  Even though Diana limited the types of foods I could choose from, she gave me so much freedom with those foods that I never felt like I was dieting.  In fact, I ate more than I was used to!  I learned to love veggies again and had fun mixing and matching proteins, carbs and fats to achieve the right ratios Diana wanted.  Many of the other athletes complained about their diet and how they couldn’t wait until the show was over so they could eat what they want.  I never felt that way.  In fact, I’m so conditioned now to eat the way she taught me that I have no desire to eat otherwise and am, in fact, quite confused when it comes to thinking about eating any other way.  The workout progressions Diana gave me were done in a manner each week that it was slight enough to not seem overwhelming.  Starting at 133 lbs in July, with Diana’s help, we got me down to a lean, mean 111 lbs. the morning of my show.  Mission accomplished on achieving the goal of coming in leaner and improving in my placing at this show!

If you’re reading this and thinking about preparing for a show and wondering how you’d be able to do so, just go for it!  You don’t have it all figured out on Day 1.  Diana’s system of preparation is such that you don’t feel overwhelmed, but totally empowered.  Everything unfolds as you go along.  The preparation, energy and dedication that goes into getting ready for a competition is very important and it does take some creativity and flexibility in how one is going to get the workouts, shopping, cooking, etc. done while taking care of your other responsibilities such as taxiing kids around, helping with homework, and working a full-time job.  But the reward is so worth it.  There will be small changes to your schedule and shifting of responsibilities and sometimes leaving the chores to be done later.  It’s okay….those clean clothes that need folded…they’ll be there when you get home!  Don’t stress.  You can do this!

My daughter was there every step of the way, holding me accountable, taking progress photos and promising to tell Diana if I cheated on my diet…she told me she’d be able to find her online.  Her love, encouragement, hugs and accountability made it all worth it!  Obviously, Diana was instrumental in this transformation and I am so blessed to have had her on my side.  I’ve learned so much through this process.  The understanding that the nutrition component is paramount to putting it all together has piqued my interest in pursuing a nutrition and wellness certification which I am currently studying for.  I can’t wait to “pay it forward” and live the Hitch Fit motto of

“Believe→Transform→Inspire”

Thank you, Diana and Hitch Fit!”
