Top 10 Tips to De-stress Your Diet

If you’re like most people, the word “diet” makes you cringe. Here at Hitch Fit, we want to change your reaction to eating healthy. We’re here to make proper nutrition simple and less stressful. So, we’re here to provide 10 tips to make your healthy eating experience a pleasant one.  Don’t think it’s possible? Read on!

1. Eat Regularly

Here at Hitch Fit, we don’t believe in starving yourself to get a great body. The truth of the matter is, you can eat and still lose weight (as long as you’re eating the right foods)! Eating regularly is crucial for anyone looking to lose weight. Your goal is to eat about every 3 hours. This will keep your blood sugar levels stable, which keeps you from overeating later. Eating regularly will jumpstart your metabolism for the day. In other words, you’ll burn fat faster and have more energy! Just be sure you eat a small, healthy portion (not a 3-course meal 3 times a day!).

2. Make a Grocery List (and Stick to it)

Making a grocery list makes you conscious of what you should eat. Sticking to a list will help overpower your temptation for junk food. If it’s not on the list, don’t even look at it! And don’t even think about going to the grocery store when you’re hungry; it’s not a good idea and you will buy more than you need.  At Hitch Fit, we recommend shopping on the perimeter of the grocery store (produce, meats and seafood, dairy).  In other words, avoid the frozen dinner aisle.  Remember; the produce section is our favorite and it could become yours, too!

3. Eat What You Enjoy

Diets aren’t about eating things you hate. When you enjoy what you’re eating, you’re more likely to stick to your diet. There are tons of low-calorie recipes online that are really tasty! You don’t have to skip the pizza, quesadilla, or even the chocolate Soufflé anymore—now that’s de-stressing a diet!

4. Stop with the Soda, Already!

Soda has so many disadvantages; it’s not worth it. Soda has been proven to cause obesity, cavities, caffeine dependency and even brittle bones. Many people opt for diet soft drinks to cut out calories, but artificial sweeteners are unhealthy as well. Try carrying a bottle of water with you wherever you go (choose a reusable bottle; it’s eco-friendly!). It will get you hydrated and help you say “no” to soda.

5. Don’t Eat While Distracted

Eating while watching TV, working, or surfing the Internet is a sure-fire way to overeat. When you’re engaged in these activities, you’re not thinking about your level of fullness. Your mind might be too distracted to hear your body saying “Hey, I’m full. Stop eating now!” So put down the laptop and sit at the table so you can relax and enjoy your food!

6. Eat When You’re Hungry

Hear that growling pang in your stomach? That’s hunger! Eating only when you’re hungry seems pretty obvious, but many people eat for a variety of reasons. For some, eating is a way to relieve stress and to prevent being bored. Many others eat for pleasure. Skip these binge-eating sessions and save the calories for when you’re actually hungry.

7. Portion Control

Overeating is one of the most common ways individuals gain weight. Diets aren’t always about what you eat, but how much of it you eat. Control your portions according to calories and nutrients. If something has a higher calorie content, eat very little and fill up on a lower calorie option. Try this trick; divide your plate into quarters and designate 50% to fruits and veggies, 25% to carbs, and the last 25% to protein. This is a simple way to eat less and still be satisfied.

8. Keep a Food Journal

Write down what you eat in a journal…and don’t lie! In a recent study from Science Daily, researchers found that people who utilized a food journal lose twice as much weight as those who do not. Keeping track of what you eat helps you identify eating habits. Once you know your habits, it’s easier to change them. Writing down your food intake is a simple tip to consuming less and being healthier.

9. Set Goals

Think of the goals you want to achieve. Be specific, like “I want to lose 20 pounds by next March”. This keeps your motivation high. Make sure you your goals are realistic and achievable. Yeah, most of us would like to lose 20 pounds in a week, but it’s not realistic. Setting unrealistic and unachievable goals is the best way to lose motivation. Get in the diet mindset and write your goals on paper, and stick to them.

10. Exercise

Exercising is the easiest way to lose weight and stay on track. Besides losing weight, exercise has many other health benefits. Exercise increases energy, combats diseases, improves mood, and can help you sleep sounder. To stay motivated to exercise, make a friend join or hire a personal trainer. Start exercising and watch the pounds fall off!

Eating healthy doesn’t have to be complicated and stressful! Incorporating these simple tips into your daily regimen can help you lose weight and become a healthier you!
