<p>The percentage of overweight children in the United States is growing at an alarming rate, with 1 out of 3 kids now considered overweight or obese. From 1980 to 2008, the prevalence of obesity in children aged 6 to 11 years tripled from 6.5% to 19.6%. The prevalence of obesity in teenagers more than tripled from 5% to 18.1% in the same time frame.  Why is this happening?</p>
<p><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">What causes obesity?</span></strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;"> </span><br />
The causes of obesity are complex and include genetic, biological, behavioral and cultural factors.  Basically, obesity occurs when a person eats more calories than the body burns up.  If one parent is obese, there is a 50 percent chance that the children will also be obese.  However, when both parents are obese, the children have an 80 percent chance of being obese.  Although certain medical disorders can cause obesity, less than 1 percent of all obesity is caused by physical problems.  Obesity in childhood and adolescence can be related to:</p>
<ul>
<li>poor eating habits</li>
<li>overeating or <a href="http://www.aacap.org/cs/root/facts_for_families/teenagers_with_eating_disorders">binging</a></li>
<li>lack of exercise (i.e., couch potato kids)</li>
<li>family history of obesity</li>
<li>medical illnesses (endocrine, neurological problems)</li>
<li>medications (steroids, some <a href="http://www.aacap.org/cs/root/facts_for_families/psychiatric_medication_for_children_and_adolescents_part_ii_types_of_medications">psychiatric medications</a>)</li>
<li>stressful life events or changes (separations, <a href="http://www.aacap.org/cs/root/facts_for_families/children_and_divorce">divorce</a>, <a href="http://www.aacap.org/cs/root/facts_for_families/children_and_family_moves">moves</a>, deaths, <a href="http://www.aacap.org/cs/root/facts_for_families/child_abuse_the_hidden_bruises">abuse</a>)</li>
<li>family and peer problems</li>
<li>low self-esteem</li>
<li><a href="http://www.aacap.org/cs/root/facts_for_families/the_depressed_child">depression</a> or other emotional problems</li>
</ul>
<p><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">What are risks and complications of obesity?</span></strong><br />
There are many risks and complications with obesity.  Physical consequences include:</p>
<ul>
<li>increased risk of heart disease</li>
<li>high blood pressure</li>
<li>diabetes</li>
<li>breathing problems</li>
<li><a href="http://www.aacap.org/cs/root/facts_for_families/childrens_sleep_problems">trouble sleeping</a></li>
</ul>
<p>We see it everyday, news and information that bring to the front our problem with our weight.  It is a national problem.  It’s not just your older sedentary population; it’s not just your overworked middle-age population; and it’s not just your nerdy teenage population.  It is a national epidemic.</p>
<p>The first question I always have, is how did we get here?  How did we go from one of the most physically fit nations, to just wallowing in our weight?</p>
<p>Over the last thirty years, food nutritionists and the food industry as a whole have embraced the idea of lowering our fat intake.  This was a direct result of the information published by the government that encouraged less egg consumption because of the cholesterol found in eggs.  After that particular piece of information, doctors began to discover that when we consume fat, we have higher incidences of cholesterol problems.  The logical conclusion: fat must be bad for you.  And so, an entire generation as grown up with fat-free foods.  A whole generation grew up believing that fat was what made us fat, clogged our arteries, and generally caused ill-health.</p>
<p>So what did we do? We turned to carbs to make up for the loss in taste of food that had the fat removed; for you see, fat is what gives many of our foods their delicious taste.  When you remove the fat, the taste must be artificially injected into the food.  The end result is a food that is higher in carbohydrate content, but lower in fat.  Hence, all the wonderful labels displaying  the claim of “fat free” but neglect to mention the higher level of carbohydrates.  Lowered fat should have created a population of slim, trim, healthy people. Right?</p>
<p>We could not have been further from the truth.  As it turns out, fat is a necessary part of our metabolic processes.  We need the fat in order to properly utilize many of the vitamins and nutrients we consume.  When did we make this discovery?  Probably some thirty years too late for some people.</p>
<p>Now, we have an entire generation of young people, who have because of their high carbohydrate food choices, become a nation of obese adults.  Never before has a nation recorded the kind of obesity problems this nation is facing now.  Never before have we ever had so much, to have so little.  These young people are experiencing low self-esteem, weight related health problems, and whole host of emotional problems, thanks to obesity issue.  How can we try to help them correct this problem?</p>
<p>According to the guides published by the USDA, calorie needs vary from one age group to another, one gender to another.  So how do you determine what your individual needs are?  You can setup a journal for recording your daily caloric intake for about a month.  Make a note of your weight each day.  If you don’t gain any weight during the course of that month, you’re eating your recommended calorie level in order to maintain your weight.  Now, take that calorie information, use the food pyramid and comprise a combination of foods that will help you achieve this recommended daily intake, and still be enough to be filling and please the palette. You now have an individualized healthy eating plan.  This is the safe sure way to reach weight loss goals.  It didn’t become a problem overnight, and it won’t go away overnight.</p>

<p>Parents have to be active in the childs life.  If you are eating Mcdonalds everyday then your child will be.  You have the control to make your children very healthy and active.  What you are putting on the table, the time you spend with them are all things that can help your child be healthy and fit!!</p>

<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: .5in;">I cannot tell you the endless amount of people who neglect the most important aspect of Muscle building, fat loss or overall health&#8230; NUTRITION.  I will get people writing telling me they are working out 2 hours per day and their bodies are not changing, or changing very slow.  You see without the proper nutrition all that workout goes to waste, sometimes you even burn muscle which in time will only make your body slow down and become fatter.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: .5in;">Look at it like this.. You Workout maybe 1-2 hours per day plus the fact that your body burns calories throughout the entire 24 hours of a day. You sleep for 6-8 hours per day.  What are you doing the rest of the 14-17 hours of the day?  EATING.  If you put bad foods in your body, you will look and feel bad.. SIMPLE AS THAT..</p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: .5in;">Nutrition as it applies to our daily lives means that we take in what we need to maintain our body’s healthy state.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Nutrition has become an important word thanks to the involvement of the USDA in our daily food requirements, and the FDA’s involvement in determining what is and is not dangerous for us to consume.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: .5in;">What about eating habits?<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>What about vitamins?<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>What role does our daily intake play in our health?<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>More than you have been lead to believe or understand.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>The body’s ability to remain well under anything other than ideal conditions is a direct result of the nutrition received on a daily basis.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>The mind’s ability to remain well is, again, a direct result of our nutritional intake.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>For instance, the human brain doesn’t develop well without the necessary input of protein in our daily diet.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>No protein, no intelligence.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: .5in;">Nutrition refers to the nurturing of our body, in our ability to keep it healthy and functioning as it is supposed to do.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Our ability to provide the body with all the necessary food, vitamins, and minerals so that we continue to thrive in our daily life processes.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="mso-tab-count: 1;"> </span>How do we determine that we are providing the essential nutritional needs?<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>That knowledge comes by educating ourselves about what our individual needs are, the needs of our family, and then taking that knowledge and applying it to the foods we buy, that we prepare, and that our families consume.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: .5in;">Health is taught as a science course, and addresses matters of personal hygiene, diseases, and the broad spectrum of health as it applies to the masses.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>No individual attention is given to how to attain optimal health via our eating habits.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>It’s funny that we skip the most important, fundamental building block to good health: our nutritional and caloric consumption in our food.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>I personally believe we should have the field of nutrition and physical activity married into something combined to provide every person that enters the school system with a personal knowledge of their bodies’ needs, caloric, and nutritional, so that they complete their education with mental and physical competencies, as well as analytical and mathematical competence.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: .5in;">Nutrition is a concept that should be as important to our educational process as our ability to count. The ability to recognize our nutritional requirements, find the foods we need to fulfill those requirements, and differentiate between healthy food consumption and “unhealthy” eating habits is not an option.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Not for a healthy, happy, long, and quality life</p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: .5in;">What we should absorb as we travel along life’s daily path is a way to incorporate good nutrition into our lifestyle.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>There is generally just as much room for good as there is bad, it just so happens that bad nutritional habits hold more appeal.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="mso-tab-count: 1;"> </span>Bad nutrition receives more advertising dollars than healthy nutritional options, and is often more visible.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>But that doesn’t mean it’s any easier, more convenient, or cheaper.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Habits, generally take about two weeks to make the switch from conscious action to unconscious thought.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Two weeks is not long, it’s not long at all for decisions that will affect you for the rest of your life.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>It’s also not long for the potential reward that comes from setting an example your children can follow, and you can be proud for them to follow. You teach them daily about the good habits you want them to develop, and then you demonstrate a bad one in your nutrition choices.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>C’mon, mom and dad, let’s practice what we preach.</p>

<p>Daily we recieve emails at Hitch Fit from people wanting to lose weight or build muscle. One of the most common questions I’m asked is “<em>does drinking really affect the muscle growth and fat burning process?</em>” I’m sorry to say it, but yes, too much alcohol will almost definitely have a significant negative impact on your muscle-building/fat burning results. Alcohol is far more harmful than most people think, and it’s very important that you understand how this drug (yes, alcohol is a drug) is affecting your progress. This is not an anti-drug speech, but if you’re serious about achieving a truly impressive physique, you should definitely be aware of the 6 main ways that alcohol is slowing down your gains and causing you to store fat.</p>
<p><strong>1) Dehydration.</strong></p>
<p>The kidneys must filter very large amounts of water in order to break down the alcohol, and this can result in severe dehydration within the body. Water plays an absolutely crucial role in the muscle-building process, and being even slightly dehydrated is a recipe for disaster. The muscles alone are comprised of 70% water.  When dehydrated you are weaker, have less energy and your mind is not as clear.  Bottom line you just do not function as efficently.</p>
<p><strong>2) It negatively affects protein synthesis.</strong></p>
<p>Protein synthesis is the process where amino acids are joined together to form complete proteins. Excessive alcohol consumption slows this process down by up to 20%, and since your muscles are made up of protein, you can see how this is a problem.  You put positive things in your body you will get positive results.</p>
<p><strong>3) It lowers testosterone levels and increases estrogen.</strong></p>
<p>Testosterone is the most important muscle-building hormone in your body. One of the limiting factors that determines how much muscle a person can gain is their level of free-flowing testosterone.  If this decreases then so will your muscle gaining in turn causing you to not burn fat as quickly.</p>
<p><strong>4) It increases fat storage.</strong></p>
<p>With 7 empty calories per gram, alcohol can actually be quite fattening. It can also lead to making mistakes with what you are eating if intoxicated.   If your eating and drinking more calories then your burning which typically happens when you go out for a night of fun you will store fat.   Changing your body is about positive choice making.  It can domino is a very positive way or a negative way, this is something you have control over.</p>
<p><strong> 5) It depletes the body of vitamins and minerals.</strong></p>
<p>Alcohol consumption causes vitamins A, C, the B&#8217;s, calcium, zinc and phosphorus to all be drained at rapid rates. Vitamins and minerals keep every little process in your body functioning properly, and many of these processes involve muscle growth/fat burning and maintenance.</p>
<p><strong>6) Increased appitite- </strong></p>
<p>Alcohol has been shown to increase peoples appitietes. Drinking can cause you to not make the best of choices when it comes to food choices.  Think of a long night at the bar, drinking one to many drinks.  The last thing you want to eat is a piece of grilled chicken and broccoli, You want something very filling because the only calories you have had are empty ones for the different drinks you have.  You want soemthing fatty and salty at 1am. You typically will go to bed after eating this meal so these are calories that will not be burned off and will be stored adding to your fat weight</p>
<p>It’s important to have fun in life, but too much fun can lead to problems. If you’re serious about achieving significant muscle-building results, you definitely need to monitor your intake of alcohol and make sure that you are consuming it in moderation. A few drinks here and there shouldn’t be a problem, but if you find yourself drinking every weekend you can almost certainly kiss your muscle gains goodbye.</p>
<p>If your goals are to achieve the body you have always wanted and feel great then I recommend keeping your drinking to a minimum.  Don’t be afraid to go out and have a good time once in a while. Just make sure to keep your drinking limited and properly nourish yourself to lessen its effects by drinking lots of water and electrolytes. As long as you monitor what you’re doing you can achieve an impressive physique and have a social life at the same time.</p>

Having Big arms and chest is one thing but having rock hard defined abs is so another. Everyone knows that nothing turns heads like a defined full set of abs.  Contrary to popular belief, the abs or Rectus Abdominis is really only one muscle. It stretches from the top of your pelvis up to your ribcage. The &#8220;six-pack&#8221; as it is called is merely sections of this one muscle.</div>

<div><strong>Dispelling the Ab Myths:</strong></div>
<div id="_mcePaste">The action of any muscle is simply to contract. And as you can&#8217;t contract half your bicep or quad, it makes sense that you cannot contract half your abs as well. Therefore the myths about &#8220;upper ab&#8221; and &#8220;lower ab&#8221; training are total nonsense. I&#8217;m not discounting those training methods but the simple fact is that if you can&#8217;t see your lower abs, it just means you&#8217;ve got fat covering them, not that you need to work them harder.  You can do a million crunches and yes they will get stronger but they will not be defined until you get the layer of fat off.</div>

<div id="_mcePaste">What does strengthen your abs is what strengthens any other muscle in your body. Contraction! In this case &#8211; Decreasing the distance between your rib cage and your pelvis. So we come back to the good old sit-up. But there are a few things to keep in mind.</div>
<div>Firstly, forget about the cool all-the-way-up sit-ups you see in the movies. Your abs are fully contracted when your shoulders are about 5 to 6 inches off the ground. So don&#8217;t bother trying to impress or outperform someone by touching your elbows to your knees. It does nothing for you. Crunches as they are sometimes called are the way to go.</div>
<div>Secondly, don&#8217;t wedge your feet under something to help you get up. You don&#8217;t need to do this if you are doing crunches properly anyway. Your legs should be at 90 degrees to each other and your knees at 45 degrees to your waist. If you need to, use something to press your heels back against to stabilize yourself. This way you will use your hamstrings instead of your hip flexors which will keep the focus on your abs.</div>
<div>Thirdly, keep your hands lightly held against the side of your head or crossed on your chest. Don&#8217;t clasp them together behind your head or neck. If you do you will be tempted to pull with your hands to get the last few reps out, which will put unnecessary strain on this fragile part of the spine.</div>

<div><strong>Alternative:</strong></div>
<div id="_mcePaste">Another good exercise for abs is kneeling crunches. You will need special equipment to perform this exercise. This is where you kneel and contract your abs so that your upper body arches forward/downward. You hold a rope attached to a pulley with weights for extra resistance. Most gyms will have a rope attachment to the triceps pull down to perform this exercise. The idea is to lock your arms against your upper body so that you pull down only with your abs and not your arms.</div>

<div id="_mcePaste"><strong>The Secret:</strong></div>
<div id="_mcePaste">The difficulty in obtaining great abs is not so much building the muscle. It&#8217;s cutting enough fat from your body for them to show. You probably know by now that spot-reduction of fat simply doesn&#8217;t work here. In order to show those abs you need overall fat loss.  You must eat right , you must train hard and you must be patient.  Cut all the bad foods and liquids from your diet and soon your body fat will start decreasing.</div>

<h1>What&#8217;s in Fast Food Chicken? (Hint: It’s NOT Chicken)</h1>

<p>Frying chicken is fairly simple, if a little messy. You dip pieces of chicken into a mix of egg and milk, roll them around in flour and spices, then cook the chicken in sizzling hot oil until the pieces are brown, crispy and delicious.</p>
<p>But wait! Don’t forget to add a dash of <em>dimethylpolysiloxane</em>, an anti-foaming agent made of silicone that is also used in Silly Putty and cosmetics.</p>
<p>Now add a heaping spoonful of <em>tertiary butylhydroquinone</em> (TBHQ), which is a chemical preservative and a form of butane (AKA lighter fluid). One gram of TBHQ can cause “nausea, vomiting, ringing in the ears, delirium, a sense of suffocation, and collapse,&#8221; according to <em>A Consumer’s Dictionary of Food Additives.</em> Five grams of TBHQ can <em>kill</em>you.</p>
<p>Sprinkle on thirteen other corn-derived ingredients, and you&#8217;re only about twenty shy as many ingredients as a single chicken nugget from McDonald’s. And you <em>were</em> using pulverized chicken skin and mechanically reclaimed meat for your chicken, right?</p>
<p>No one in his or her right mind would cook chicken like this. Yet every day, hoards of Americans consume these ingredients in Chicken McNuggets, which McDonalds claims are “made with white meat, wrapped up in a crisp tempura batter.”</p>
<p>However chicken only accounts for about 50% of a Chicken McNugget. The other 50% includes a large percentage of corn derivatives, sugars, leavening agents and other completely synthetic ingredients, meaning that parts of the nugget do not come from a field or farm at all. They come from a petroleum plant. Hungry?</p>
<p>Scariest perhaps is the fact that this recipe is a new and improved, “healthier” <a href="http://hitchfit.com/micahhitchfit-com/2010/06/22/nutrition/fast-food-cardio/">Chicken McNugget</a> launched in 2003 after a federal judge called the deep-fried poultry bites “a McFrankenstein creation of various elements not utilized by the home cook.” Also terrifying is the fact that these McFrankenuggets are overwhelmingly marketed to children who love their fun shapes and kid-friendly size.</p>
<p>While McDonald’s is of course the poster child for fast food ire, if you look at the nutritional information for chicken at any fast food restaurant, the ingredient list will be dozens of items longer than the egg, flour, chicken and oil recipe you might use at home.</p>
<p>Eating fast food is a habit, but it is one that you can break? No doubt you rarely plan to have a delicious meal at Arby’s for dinner, a lingering lunch at Carl’s Jr. or a special breakfast at the Burger King in the airport. It just happens. You are late, tired, hungry, broke, or all of the above. You have no time, and you must find something to eat before you crash. All of a sudden a bright, friendly sign beckons from the side of the road: Drive-through!</p>
<p>In five minutes you are happily chowing down on an inexpensive, filling meal. But don’t be fooled – the true cost of fast food does not come out of your wallet, but out of your body, your health, and your years on this earth.</p>
<p>You <em>can</em> break the unhealthy fast food habit: educate yourself about the true ingredients of fast food items, plan ahead for your meals, carry healthy snacks like nuts to ward off hunger and cook healthy chicken recipes at home. Convince yourself that<a href="http://www.organicauthority.com/foodie-buzz/what-is-in-fast-food-chicken-hint-its-not-chicken.html"> fast food</a><a href="http://hitchfit.com/micahhitchfit-com/2010/06/22/nutrition/fast-food-cardio/"> </a>is the most disgusting stuff on the planet and is harmful to you and to those you love. After reading this, that shouldn’t be too hard.</p>
<p><strong>Full ingredient list for a Chicken McNugget (from <a href="http://www.mcdonalds.com/us/en/food/full_menu/chicken/mcnuggets.html" target="_blank">McDonald’s website</a>)</strong>:</p>
<p><em>White boneless chicken, water, food starch-modified, salt, seasoning (autolyzed yeast extract, salt, wheat starch, natural flavoring (botanical source), safflower oil, dextrose, citric acid, rosemary), sodium phosphates, seasoning (canola oil, mono- and diglycerides, extractives of rosemary). Battered and breaded with: water, enriched flour (bleached wheat flour, niacin, reduced iron, thiamin mononitrate, riboflavin, folic acid), yellow corn flour, food starch-modified, salt, leavening (baking soda, sodium acid pyrophosphate, sodium aluminum phosphate, monocalcium phosphate, calcium lactate), spices, wheat starch, whey, corn starch. Prepared in vegetable oil (Canola oil, corn oil, soybean oil, hydrogenated soybean oil with TBHQ and citric acid added to preserve freshness). <p>I&#8217;m sure you&#8217;ve seen the ads, commercials and infomercials for detox cleansing systems, or perhaps you&#8217;ve had a friend who swears that by drinking lemon water all day or cayenne maple tea, you can shed loads of unwanted &#8220;weight&#8221; in a week or less. Or maybe you&#8217;ve heard that one of your favorite celebrities &#8220;cleanses&#8221; and that&#8217;s why they look the way that they do. What&#8217;s the scoop then? With all of these glowing testimonials, is detox cleansing truly a good way to lose weight?</p>
<p>Well, I guess you could say the answer to that question is yes. IF you are interested in short term weight loss, IF you are interested in &#8220;scale weight&#8221; that will fluctuate back to where it started as soon as you return to your normal eating habits, and IF you don&#8217;t care that you are potentially losing lean muscle tissue, slowing down your metabolism and putting your body in a state where it will much more easily store added fat. If that is what you are interested in, then go ahead and do a cleanse.</p>
<p>You see, the majority of cleanses are either all liquid, or are very low calorie. Under these conditions, when your body is getting far fewer calories than it is used to, and typically far fewer calories than it needs to even perform the basic bodily functions, you are definitely going to lose &#8220;weight&#8221;. The weight you are losing is mainly from water in the first couple days of the cleanse, you also lose glycogen, and the most dangerous part of these low calorie cleanses is that when you put your body into a state where it thinks it is starving, it will adapt quickly by slowing down your metabolism, using calories at a very slow rate so that it doesn&#8217;t starve, and feeding on lean muscle tissue for fuel as needed. You may lose a small amount of fat weight in the process of cleansing too, but the adverse affects of losing the muscle tissue, slowing down your metabolism, and then gaining back fat weight quickly and easily when the cleanse is over are NOT worth it.</p>
<p>If you are interested in FAT loss, and not just scale weight, then we have a completely different story. The answer to should you do a detox cleanse if you are wanting to shed fat weight is a resounding NO. If you are interested in having a lean and fit physique, then starving your body for any period of time isn&#8217;t going to get you to where you want to be! The best way to lose fat weight is actually to EAT and EXERCISE, the most effective means of fat loss, and I don&#8217;t just mean short term fat loss, but LONG term, is to make healthy changes to your eating and exercise habits that you can maintain for the rest of your life. You&#8217;ve got to eat the right types of foods, whole foods like lean protein sources, whole grains, fruits, vegetables and healthy fats, you&#8217;ve got to eat frequently to keep your metabolism racing and to make your body a fat burning machine, and you&#8217;ve got to eat enough calories so that your body isn&#8217;t afraid to use up that fuel for energy, and so that you don&#8217;t sacrifice losing precious lean muscle tissue.</p>
<p>Ironically, the best way not only to lose body fat but ALSO to cleanse or &#8220;detox&#8221; your body is by eating properly and drinking plenty of water. Eat a diet consisting of whole foods, drink 3/4 of a gallon to a gallon of water a day, eat plenty of vegetables and fruits then your bowels and kidneys are going to function just fine. You don&#8217;t need to starve yourself by going on a liquid or low calorie cleanse to &#8220;detoxify&#8221; your body. And rather than focusing on just detoxing your body for a couple of days or a week, why not focus on keeping it in a non-toxic state ALL the time by creating and maintaining a fit and healthy lifestyle and eating habits!</p>

<p>One of my favorite dinner nights when I&#8217;m not dieting hardcore is the taco night.  I always love eating a meal that can be perceived as a bad meal yet you turn it into something healthy by cutting out most of the unnecessary fats and calories.</p>

<p>The tacos in the video are about 150 calories per taco. This is a meal that you eat when you are not dieting and just in a maintenance phase or bulk phase. If you want to shed some of the calories use less cheese or fat free cheese, cut the sour cream and switch to a small wheat tortilla ..</p>
<p>So women if you decide to make these tacos stick with 1-2 tacos and guys stick with 2-4</p>

With candy taunting you at every turn, it can be easy to succumb to temptation, load up on the extra sugar and pack on the added pounds, and that’s not just the parents. Childhood obesity is a very serious issue, more and more children are tipping the scales at ever increasing weights, and high unhealthy body fat percentages. Keeping tantalizing candy around and allowing them to consume with no limits, is going to do them far more harm than good. Follow these Hitch Fit Healthy Halloween Tips and keep your kids and yourself in tip top shape during this season of spooks!</p>

<p>1.	Don’t buy your Halloween candy early! If you have bags of Halloween candy lying around the house you are likely to start consuming it in advance, this can sabotage any fitness goals you are trying to attain. Purchase your candy a day or two ahead of time, keep it in a cabinet until it is time for it to be handed out.<br />
2.	Don’t purchase your favorite candy. If there is a particular type of candy that you KNOW you can’t resist, then nip the problem in the bud by purchasing something that isn’t tempting to you. If you love Snickers, steer clear of them and choose the Smarties.<br />
3.	Don’t let the kids have a candy free for all. Once you’ve inspected the candy treats that your children collect during Halloween, allow them to choose a couple treats to enjoy, if you have a child that is prone to overeating or binging then be sure to get control over the candy treats.<br />
4.	Trick or treat then trash the sweets! Once Halloween is over the best thing to do with Halloween treats is to throw them out. If that seems wasteful to you, then opt to bring them to work and give them away. The problem is that the candy is not going to benefit anyone, so throwing it away is the best option.<br />
5.	Keep treats out of sight. Whether it is pre Halloween, or post. If you decide to keep candy in your home, keep it hidden in a cabinet. If it is in a convenient spot and can be seen it will be eaten much more quickly, with less regard for moderation.<br />
6.	Opt to give out healthy snack options instead of candy! Giving out a healthy treat doesn’t have to be a bummer.  The 100 calorie snack packs of crackers, a small bag of chips, raisins or craisins, peanuts, cashews or sunflower seeds are healthier options than a piece of candy.  Sugar Free treats such as individually wrapped jello or pudding cups can replace high sugar treats. Sugar free candies or sugar free gum (as long as child is old enough) are another great substitute.<br />
7.	Give away trinkets instead of candy! A few great ideas that will still be fun for the kids, but not load them up with sugar and fat are stickers, mini Halloween magnets, bracelets and charms for the girls, army men or mini cars for the boys, miniature note pads, mini play dough, fun bandaids, fake tattoos, glow sticks, chalk, crayons etc. You can get great deals on bundles of these items at places such as Walmart or Costco or a company like Oriental Trading www.orientaltrading.com<br />
8.	Instead of focusing on just candy, do other fun Halloween activities with your kids such as pumpkin carving, apple picking or you could create a Halloween decoration or scarecrow, head out to your local haunted barn, or pick up some age appropriate Halloween movies.<br />
9.	Many “Fun Size” candies like M&amp;M’s, Skittles, Butterfinger etc. have nearly 100 calories in one small little bag, those calories will add up very quickly even with just a couple treats in a day and will wreck your diet. If you have to curb a sweet tooth opt instead for individually wrapped candies such as a Hershey kiss, tootsie roll or Smarties.<br />
10.	Instead of candy, opt to make healthier treats for your kids like our “Boo-Nanners” which Micah demonstrated making on the NBC news here in Kansas City just this past week, check out the link below!</p>

<p><strong>“Boo-Nanners” </strong><br />
Banana<br />
1 Popsicle Stick<br />
Shredded Coconut<br />
Orange Juice<br />
2 Raisins<br />
Cut the banana in half, peel the banana and stick the popsicle stick up through the center.<br />
Fill a glass with orange juice and dip the banana into the juice for 5 seconds<br />
Place the banana on a plate and smother it with shredded coconut<br />
Take two raisins and gently press them into the banana for eyes.<br />

<p>With so many people drinking soda, coffee or popping diet pills it was a must  for me to explain all the positive and negative things associated with this  highly addictive stimulant. I’m going to give you the Good, The Bad and the  Downright Ugly. Everything we do and eat must have balance. Too much caffeine  can have some bad side effects.<br />

<p>The GOOD- (if taken in moderation, 1-2 cups of coffee or tea, and no sugar  added)<br />
- You become more alert and think clearer<br />
- Increases your  short-term memory<br />
- Can help you stay younger feeling<br />
- Short term  improves your mood and overcomes depression, creating an<br />
- Can increase  exercise intensity and stamina<br />
- Can be used as a painkiller<br />
- Grows brain  cells in the areas of the brain responsible for long-term memory</p>
<p>The BAD-(in excess, drinking it morning, noon and night)</p>
<p>- Mood Swings</p>
<p>- Insomnia</p>
<p>- Weight Gain</p>
<p>- Depression</p>
<p>- Anxiety</p>
<p>- Energy swings</p>
<p>The UGLY-(downright gross)</p>

<p>This is a video I recently saw that portrays what you are really drinking  when you drink that soda loaded with sugar and calories. This should make you  think twice the next time you choose a beverage.</p>
<p>As the video states by drinking one can of soda a day over a year period of  time you can gain up to 10lbs of fat per year. To burn that off you need to do  about 35,000 calories of cardio, which comes out to about 58 hours of running,  not a great trade off in my opinion.</p>
<p>Many people who are addicted to caffeine were shown to be addicted to another  stimulate called tobacco. We all know the risks of smoking such as cancer,  emphysema to name a few. Caffeine can be just as addicting and have some  negative effects such as anxiety, mood swings, insomnia and periods of fatigue  during the day. You want to keep your body balanced energy wise pretty much from  the moment you wake up till the moment you go to bed other then your workout  where you will need to fuel your body with foods that will spike your energy  levels for better performance and when you are getting ready for bed you need to  become much more calm and relaxed so you can sleep properly. Drinking things  like soda and coffee in excess will cause imbalance of energy levels, which  means you will have higher energy levels temporarily but you will crash than  will have feeling of fatigue and depression. You want to stay away from soda for  another reason, the large amount of sugar and empty calories. Sugar is the one  thing that must be eliminated for your diet for you to achieve the body and  health you desire. When you take too much sugar in at once your insulin levels  spike causing you to store fat that is not burned off. The key is trying to get  all your energy from working out and eating the proper foods. Start adding  oatmeal in the morning and brown rice for lunch these are slower digestive  carbohydrates that are geared to give you long term energy not the super high,  super low feeling</p>

<p>ADDICTED TO SODA, HOW TO QUIT?</p>
<p>So now down to the nitty giddy… How do I quit drinking soda, IM ADDICTED?  Over 5 years ago my mother went through a period of time where she was drinking  up to 6 cans or more per day. Each one of these very popular soft drinks had  over 35 grams of sugar and 200 calories in them. That’s 800-1200 calories and  over 140-260 grams of sugar causing her constant up and downs throughout the day  and weight gain over that period of time. When she started crashing she would  drink another can to keep her energized. Needless to say I showed her what I  used my soda for, I opened my hood on my car to find a corroded battery cable..  I poured my soda all over the corrosion and to her surprise it ate all of it off  the battery. I also shared with her a study they did with a bolt and a popular  soda that she happened to drink. They placed the bolt into the soda and within a  period of time the soda had 100% eaten the bolt. What does this do to your  insides? My mother soon quit all sodas and switched to nothing but water. In 3  months she lost 20 lbs just because of the soda and felt far more energized  throughout the day. Initially she was tired and told me she was having headaches  but it was only a matter of time when even the thought of soda seemed  disgusting. PEOPLE GET OFF THE SODA there is no other way to put it. It’s an  addiction much like other addictions, you only have control of the situation  when you take control, until then your soda will have control and cause a  downward plunge. You will look in the mirror one day and ask yourself “what has  happened to me”.<br />
Where do soda calories go if they are not burned off? Yep  that’s right, your butt, your things, your arms and your stomach, EVERYWHERE. If  you are genetically bigger in your butt then your butt is going to get bigger  ladies. Men your stomach growing on you and those 33 jeans no longer fit, get  off the soda. Soda will make cause highs and lows throughout the day and you  will gain extra weight which means you have to buy bigger clothes, is all of  this worth it to you all over something that is 100% controllable</p>
<p>DIET/ZERO SODA CAN BE MAKE YOU GAIN EVEN MORE WEIGHT</p>

<p>The findings come from eight years of data collected by Sharon P. Fowler,  MPH, and colleagues at the University of Texas Health Science Center, San  Antonio. Fowler reported the data at the annual meeting of the American Diabetes  Association in San Diego.<br />
Fowler’s team looked at seven to eight years of  data on 1,550 Mexican-American and non-Hispanic white Americans aged 25 to 64.  Of the 622 study participants who were of normal weight at the beginning of the  study, about a third became overweight or obese.<br />
For regular soft-drink  drinkers, the risk of becoming overweight or obese was:<br />
• 26% for up to 1/2  can each day<br />
• 30.4% for 1/2 to one can each day<br />
• 32.8% for 1 to 2 cans  each day<br />
• 47.2% for more than 2 cans each day.<br />
For diet soft-drink  drinkers, the risk of becoming overweight or obese was:<br />
• 36.5% for up to 1/2  can each day<br />
• 37.5% for 1/2 to one can each day<br />
• 54.5% for 1 to 2 cans  each day<br />
• 57.1% for more than 2 cans each day.<br />
For each can of diet soft  drink consumed each day, a person’s risk of obesity went up 41%.</p>
<p>There is something within Diet soda that is causing people to become  hungrier, it could be the fact they feel they are dieting with the soda so they  super size everything or an actual chemical that is causing their brain to  increase their appetite.</p>
<p>When you do decide to let this addiction go you will go through a week or so  period of time of headaches and low energy, this is common but be prepared by  taking your multi vitamins, eat healthy foods and get your workouts in.  Substitute your soda for water. Water is yummy and does the body good. We  typically eat or drink certain things because we love the taste but you have to  look at food and drinks as your fuel for the day and your workouts not short  term satisfaction that only makes your life more difficult.</p>
