How to fight Winter Depression..

How to deal with Winter Depression

A blizzard has hit your town and your car is covered in 12 inches of snow. The last thing in the world you want to do is spend 20 minutes getting your car dug out and fight the roads to go blast 1 hour of cardio at 5am. The cold weather just does something to your body and your mind that is very hard to explain. I am a fitness junkie, I live and breathe it everyday as many of you know but even at times when the weather is fierce the last thing I want to do is leave my house to go workout. For the many of us that do not live in the beautiful weather of Hawaii or California 365 days a year and never have to worry about major climate change you can relate to this topic.

There is a condition out there that has been studied thoroughly, it’s called SAD, not the word we commonly use it as but it has many of the same side effects. Seasonal affective disorder (SAD) has been studied at length by psychologists. It is more than just the “winter blues”; it is an actual type of depression. Symptoms include cravings for specific foods, loss of energy, hopelessness and oversleeping. As the season changes so does our body to get prepared for the cold weather. I always compare it to an animal hibernating, they get prepared for the winter then stay underground or inside for months. It is much like how we are when the winter comes. The days are shorter and nights are longer, our bodies respond by shutting down earlier. Over the winter months this can lead to depression and weight gain.

People who live in warmer climates typically wear fewer clothes. You are more conscious of everyone around you and have more accountability. If the people around you are fit it brings on more accountability for you to also stay fit. In the winter we bundle up in 3 layers and can cover any extra weight we have gained. Our bodies tell us to pack on the fat to keep our bodies warm. During cold weather our body shivers because of the cold. Your body will burn calories trying to keep it balanced the only side effect of this is later on your body’s appetite raises because of the extra calories you burned while trying to regulate yourself.

The seasons affect your activity levels too. Pedometer research published in the journal Medicine and Science and Sports and Exercise uncovered a huge difference in the number of steps taken between the summer and winter:

7616 steps per day in summer
6293 steps per day in fall
5304 steps per day in winter
5850 steps in spring

Check out this crazy statistic, Studies have shown we take 2300 less steps per day in the winter. You multiply that by 4 months of cold weather and you are 276,000 less steps which are about 157 miles less in the winter compared to the summer.

Do you see where I am getting with this, less calories burned equals more lbs gained? The key is to MOVE. I am not saying go Rocky style and carry a log on your back in -20 degree weather, but if it is too cold outside to get to the gym then walk up and down your stairs at your home. Do jumping jacks 20 minutes per day… I do not care what you do just move or you will find yourself 5-10 lbs heavier once summer comes.

Here are some tips to make sure you stay fit through the winter
#1. Exercise – There is no better stress reliever and anti depressant then going to the gym and working your tail off. If you look and feel better about yourself you will not want to shut yourself off when it gets cold out. If the roads are bad then workout at home.
#2.Get sunshine- The sun will make you feel happy it also supplies us with vitamin A. If the sun is out, go take a 10 minute walk or find a window at home that the sun is shining through and relax for a bit 
#3. Have your friend’s close- Having a friend or multiple friends to go do things with or exercise together makes things much easier. The last thing you want to do is recluse yourself.
#4. Your diet- Try your best to keep things balanced. It is always tough through the holidays to not cave in and eat those delicious desserts but do your best to only have one bit of pie rather then the whole pie.
#5. Stay hydrated- Sometimes in the winter we do not sweat as much so you do not drink as much water. When we are dehydrated we will feel more sluggish which will also be another reason we do not feel like doing anything. Try and drink ¾- 1 gallon a day of water
#7. Make some goals- Through the winter months set yourself some goals, this will keep you busy and set you up for a great summer.

We all deal with things differently in life the key is trying to find your balance and the things that make you happy. Some people love the cold weather; some people find it very depressing. Either way stay focused on being the best you can be through working out, proper nutrition, positive choices and cutting negatives.

Overcoming The Uncontrollable

In life we go through things I call uncontrollables, such as a family member dying, slipping and breaking your arm, getting laid off at work. These are all things that we have no control over and can at times put us into a state of depression, stress and negativity. I wanted to share a story about myself that happened recently in which I had an uncontrollable situation occur having all of these sorts of feeling and negative urges yet in the end it all turned out positive.

So let’s rewind about 3 months ago. Diana had said she planned on competing at the Wbff World Championships and asked if it was something I wanted to do. My first reaction was no. It’s not my thing, I do not have the passion for it and how will I fit the time in. After about 2-3 weeks I decided I wanted to go for it. I was competing in the Male Fitness category. I would have to get my mind and body connected in a way to not only look the best I could but mentally be as strong as I could be. To those of you who have competed you understand how physically and mentally draining it can be. I started training very hard and switching my diet. About 8 weeks out we got a huge opportunity; it was time to Open Hitch Fit Gym here in Kansas City. I knew I would have to put my Training on the backburner for about 2-3 weeks because we had to flip the gym head to toe with new paint, floors, signs, equipment, everything. We were working 16-20 hours a day during that period of time and did not have the time to train properly or stick on the diet I needed to. We got through that and started finding the balance again. Staff infection 20 days before the show.

On August 27th I woke up in the morning feeling very sick and one of my arms was about 2 inches bigger then the other. My first reaction was I thought I got bit by a poisonous spider. After a few days it was only getting worse. I was unable to sleep it was one of the most painful things i have ever gone though. I was left with no range of motion, I couldnt even scratch my head. I would wake up in the middle of the night sweating and with chills at the same time. I checked myself into a hospital. The Dr. didn’t really look at it and made a quick assumption. He scripted me some mild antibiotics and sent me on my way. After about 5 days of taking the meds I was still getting worse. I went from being able to bench press 380 lbs to not being able to do 1 pushup literally overnight. I refused to quit but I started questioning if this was going to keep me off stage. I got a second Dr. to look at it and she instantly said that is not a spider bite that is a staff infection and one of the worst ones I have ever seen. If not treated in a period of time you could lose your arm. She got me on the strongest antibiotic on the market and took great care in making sure it was working. The infection slowly started going away but I had all this excess fluid under my skin. I used to laugh and say I look like Popeye. After about 10 days it was still there and still had pain. At this point I felt there was no way I was going to be able to compete and almost pulled out. I was going to have to get cut open to get the infection and drain my arm. I would have to get stitches which meant that I could not get on stage because I could possibly re-infect it. The morning before the surgery I woke up and the infection was gone, it was like a miracle. My arm had 100% motion and I was able to do pushups. I got very emotional at that point because in a blink of an eye all my hard work getting ready for this show was wasted then the next blink I WAS BACK!!!!

From that day forward I worked my tail off training 3 times a day and got on a very strict diet. I had 13 days to get somewhat presentable on stage. I had to lean on many peoples shoulders through this few weeks, Diana was always a positive foundation for me, family, friends and clients all chipped in to keep me focused on what they knew I needed. I had a goal and I never quit. No matter if I had one arm or not I was going to step on stage. I remember working out with only the right side of my body and training my clients with one arm. I said well if I lose my arm then I will just have to market myself as the best 1 armed personal trainer/ fitness model. So last weekend was show time. I got my body to 192 lbs at about 3% body fat. I ended up finishing 8th out of 30 which I was very disappointed about but like I heard from someone one time, “If you do not want to be judged then run track”

I was on stage with 30 of the top Fitness Models in the World but it was like the only person I was really competing against was myself. I was fighting to compete or not compete. I didn’t want the disappointment of losing and people saying better luck next time. This to me was not about everyone else. This was more about me fighting through what I did and beating it. I was chosen by all the Major Fitness Magazines in Canada to shoot with their publication while I was there. It was a great opportunity and experience. Make sure to keep your eyes open in the Inside Fitness, Status Fitness and Maximum Fitness.

What I did gain out of this experience was more then being able to step on stage. It was a personal victory for me. At times our minds have us thinking the worse, feeling like we cannot overcome something. I had those sorts of thoughts. Then when you say enough is enough, that is the point where you start progressing. Whatever you may be dealing with in your life, I promise you in time you too will step on stage and shine

Hope you have a wonderful upcoming weekend. How about this weekend you go for walk or start cutting some of the junk food out of your life. I promise you will feel better. We cannot control uncontrollable but we can day in day out make the best choices possible to better our lives

Is Your Past Controlling Your Future?

In times things that happen in the past shape our future and who we are but negative things happening can also keep you from being who you are. I always explain things by saying road A or road B. When something negative happens do you run to make another negative choice such as drinking or eating a carton of ice cream? How about you go to the gym and punch away on a boxing bag cook yourself some good healthy food and focus on the positive things in your life. The negatives always have a way of working themselves out by YOU CUTTING THEM OUT.

I got in a very bad car accident at the High of my career in 2005. I had just been on the Reality TV Manhunt with Carmen Electra, I had landed the cover of Men’s workout and was planning on moving to La to further my career and in a glimpse of a second BOOM my dreams were taken away. Everything I had worked so hard for was taken away. I couldn’t workout; I started making bad choices with my diet and my lifestyle. The snowball of negativity leads to the feeling of Rock Bottom. In this instance I choice Road B the road that leads to nothing but more negative. About 9 months later I finally started feeling up to working out again but what was my reasoning, I had fallen off the planet, I had lost my body and was no longer getting booked for jobs. That was the day I looked in the mirror and said enough is enough, I knew all along that was not me; this lifestyle was not me it was a waste of life and would only lead to negativity. I wanted growth and positive again so I made the choices that would help get me there. I cut every single negative person, place and changed my lifestyle. Slowly I was getting myself, my body and my life back. Out of nowhere the cover of Muscle and Body came out with Jennifer Nicole Lee (ab circle pro girl) and I on it. This got me back in the mix and really helped me see that at any moment it can be taken away so never take it for granted.

Are you that person that maybe went through a tough divorce and feels like they could never trust again? Are you the person that had a baby 3 years ago and still make the excuse that you are overweight because women’s bodies never get back to where they were post pregnancy? Are you the main provider in the house and you lost your job through the tough economical times? Each situation is unique in its own but each one can be taken care of to help make your life more positive again
If you are still holding on to things that you know are keeping you from reaching your goals or making your life better you need to sit down and ask yourself a question, Ready.. AM I WORTH IT? Ask yourself that, the answer should always be the same YES. So what can you do to get that negative past out of your life. Here are a few things

  1. Accept the fact of what has happened
  2. Forgive yet never forget
  3. Start eliminating the negatives
  4. Surround yourself around positive people
  5. Start taking care of your body, mind and spirit
  6. Tell yourself you can do this

I BELIEVE IN YOU. What is most important though is that you believe in yourself. Tell yourself you can accomplish anything and in time you will. Hope you have a great upcoming weekend
