Amy’s Story:

“Wow, so I am sitting here writing another testimonial for another transformation I just completed, the fitness model program, and it seems like yesterday I was writing a testimonial for my first transformation, to lose weight. The feelings I have this time around are remarkably quite different though.  I already knew how to eat correctly and exercise thanks to what I was taught in the last transformation, and I was used to maintaining that.  And though I was prepared to push my body to the next level in this transformation, I wasn’t prepared for how hard it was to overcome more of the mental aspects that come with losing weight. After all, we should not forget that it has only been about a year since I went from a technically obese body to a leaner body, so a lot has not sunk in my mind yet. In this testimonial, I not only want to show others what they can also accomplish, but I want to prepare them for what I like to call the “the mind games.”

First of all, some may ask why I chose to do the fitness model program after my first transformation and to be honest; I certainly wasn’t planning on going that route. In fact, I was planning on doing the competition prep. program to help prepare me for the May 2012 WBFF competition. But because the time just wasn’t right for me to compete, I searched on ways I could continue with my fitness craze.  I toyed between the ideas of just maintaining the body I had at the time or push harder and take my body to another level.  After discussing my dilemma with my husband, he surprised me on Valentine’s Day with the gift that keeps on giving…The Hitch Fit Fitness Model Program!  I was extremely excited, after all I sincerely missed my weekly e-mail conversations with Micah and Diana, but at the same time I was down-right terrified.  You see, though you learn to eat right and exercise in order to lose weight, no one can prepare you for the mental obstacles you face.  Yeah, everyone can tell you that you look great and you certainly feel better about yourself, but when you were heavy for so long, it’s VERY difficult to get yourself out of that mindset.  In fact, when I started this second program, I still didn’t feel comfortable in the “new” skin I was in.  I did not see a smaller, leaner body in my mind.  I can literally say that I would look in the mirror and still see the old, overweight me.  I had a very hard time choosing the right clothing size because I would tend to go for the bigger size, when it just was not necessary. Or you would find me covering up certain parts of my body that I really didn’t need to cover up anymore because I was still so insecure with those areas.  The mind games are probably the hardest part of this whole transition.  Yes, I have overcome some of them and am working on overcoming others, but it’s a very real feeling which nobody may realize or want to talk about.  Everything may seem beautiful and perfect on the outside, but you have no idea what the struggles are on the inside and those quite frankly are as important, if not more important in my perspective. Therefore, by going through another transformation, my hope was not only to push my body to the next level, but mentally overcome some of these aforementioned obstacles.

In the 16 week Fitness model program, I had clear goals in mind, just as I did in my first transformation, but this time around I knew that I wanted to put on muscle, I knew that I wanted my body fat to end up in the 10-12% range and I knew that I at least wanted to see a small abdominal pack peek through.  One would think that these goals are easier than my initial goals of my first transformation, to lose pounds, but you are dead wrong! At the end of the day, I had to learn a few things: 1) you might as well throw the scale out the window because it’s trivial at this point 2) in order to put on some muscle you have to be in that gym lifting weights more than running your tail end off 3) since I was coming from an already leaner state after my first transformation, the diet required a little more tweaking. As I learned these important facts, I figured out why I fell in love with health and fitness.  You see, I am a scientist at heart.  That was my profession before I had children and I found out that health and fitness is a true science (It gets me excited just writing or talking about it!)  In my first transformation, it was clear, stick with a set number of calories and specific clean foods, lift your weights and literally run your booty off to burn the calories.  For this transformation, initially I actually had the opportunity to eat more and I had a lot more variety of foods to choose from, but then to lean down I learned a carb cycling technique.  In my first transformation, I stepped on the scale a lot because I wanted to see the weight drop, but in the second transformation, I stepped on the scale once a week to just make sure I DIDN’T lose weight and if anything,  hopefully gained some weight (Ha, I never thought  I’d say that).  More importantly, I focused on body fat percentage.  I wanted that number to continue to decrease through transformation number 2 and since I followed the Hitch Fit plan, it certainly did as expected.  At the end of the day my numbers came out pretty great:

Before transforming:
Age: 31
Height: 5’7”
Weight: 165
Body Fat: 38%
Waist: 36”
Hips: 42.5”
Thighs: Not Determined

After two transformations:
Age: 31
Height: 5’7”
Weight: 120
Body Fat: 11.5%
Waist: 26.5”
Hips: 35.5”
Thighs: 19”

Again, I had clear goals in mind, I followed the Hitch Fit plan and viola it all happened, but nothing short of a lot of sweat!
Along the way, I again had a lot of funny questions.  These I always like to share along with my response.

1) How many crunches do you have to do to look like that…thousands?

Honestly, I rarely do any crunches.  Maybe 2-3 times per week, for 5-10 minutes, I spend solely on abdominal work.  I learned that if I really wanted some abs, I had to eat clean and no cheating.  The saying, “Abs are made in the kitchen” I think holds true for me.

2) Do you have nothing better to do than spend it in the gym?

Actually, I choose to spend my free time in the gym.  It helps me physically, mentally, and emotionally. And by being a happier me, allows me to be a happier wife, mother, friend, etc. I have plenty of things I do and to do outside of the gym, but working out is something just for me and I make every effort to get that time in. I don’t dip into time where I am with my children and/or my husband. I typically still work out in my basement, when the baby sleeps, the boy is at school and the husband is at work.  I make sure it’s a priority in my life along with everything else.

3) Your closet must be full of clothing?

Ha, I wish!  After my first transformation, it took me a good few months to actually clean my closet out.  The reason it took so long is because of those nasty mind games.  I thought those clothes still fit and still looked good on me.  Once, I got over that obstacle, I decided it was finally time.  There was no looking back and only looking forward.  I knew in my heart I would never get back to that size so one day, I threw it all out to others who wanted it.  Now, I literally have a fourth of the clothing I use to have. Thankfully, I have a dear friend who now dresses me and she literally makes it easy for me as all I have to say is I need clothes and she picks it all out, in the right size for me to walk in, try on and go. (Don’t be fooled though, my husband isn’t as excited about this as I am)

4) What are your plans after this transformation, another one?

Honestly, I do not know.  I have many aspirations.  I know that I will continue with this lifestyle. I know I want others to find their passion for clean eating and exercise. Once both children are in school, I will get certified as a personal trainer, but before then, I’m just going to keep kicking butt in the gym, hopefully educate and inspire others along the way.

5) Why do “you people” like to take pictures of yourself?

From my perspective, taking decent pictures of your ever changing body is important, especially to a person like me who may be struggling with the perception in my mind of myself.  These pictures allow me to see what others see.  If fact, many times, I am critiquing these pictures to see where I need to improve my body.

With that, I want to take this opportunity to say my thanks to my husband (Don), children (Jonas and Savannah), family and friends.  You all help me to push harder and become a better me and I am sincerely appreciative of that.  Last, but certainly not least, Micah and Diana, thank you for all you do!  I can’t (and don’t really want to) imagine where I would be today, without your wealth of knowledge, support, friendship, dedication, and guidance.  You all are such amazing people and have a very great gift.  I’m the blessed one here! Much Love to you!

Sincerely,
Amy Gipson
